5,000 lawsuits claim Monsanto's Roundup weed-killer caused cancer — hundreds will now proceed to trial

Hundreds of lawsuits against Monsanto Co will proceed to trial, a federal judge ruled on Tuesday.

Cancer survivors or families of those who died are blaming the company's top-selling weed-killer, Roundup, for the disease.

In 2015, the World Health Organization classified glyphosate, the key ingredient in Monsanto's weed-killer, as "probably carcinogenic to humans."

However, the US Environmental Protection Agency concluded last September that glyphosate is likely not carcinogenic to humans.

Monsanto faces 5,000 lawsuits nationwide alleging Roundup caused cancer, mainly in state courts.
