How to Choose the Right Satellite Dish for Your Home

Home satellite dishes began cropping up in the US in the early 90s. Back then, the dishes took up most of a homeowner’s yard.

Nowadays, satellite dishes are more affordable and compact than ever before. But with so many types of satellite dishes on the market, how do you know which one to choose?

Read on as we guide you through the options.

Dish Size

The first consideration when choosing between various types of satellite dishes is the size. Satellite dishes for home television use range between 18 inches to 31 inches in diameter.

The general rule is that the larger the dish, the narrower the focal angle. Where you live will also impact the size you should get.

When you call to book your satellite dish installation you can confirm the right size for your needs.

Satellite Dish Material

Satellite dishes are made from a variety of materials. Here are the most common ones.

Steel

Satellite dishes made of steel are extremely common as steel is cheap to produce.

Unfortunately, steel dishes can rust so they may not have the longevity you would like.

Plastic and Mesh

These dishes are made from wire that is coated in plastic resin or fiberglass. They tend to be more expensive than other types yet they cannot rust and so will last a long time.

If you want a dish that will stand the test of time, this is a great option.

Aluminum

Aluminum is a costly substance. Like plastic and mesh, it does not rust. That makes this type one of the most satellite dish materials.

When you compare prices on satellite dishes, be sure to compare materials as well. That way you will be comparing apples to apples.

Now let’s look at the final variable when discussing types of satellite dishes.

Stationary vs Motorized Satellite Dishes

The next factor to consider is if you want your satellite to be able to move or not.

Stationary

Stationary satellite dishes do not move. They must be lined up with a satellite in order to catch the signal so you can watch TV.

These dishes are common and come in many sizes. They can pick up many signals (especially the larger ones).

The downside is this dish can only pick up the signal of satellites that are close together.

You might want to check with your installer to see if this will be a problem.

Motorized

As the name implies, these satellite dishes have a motor in them. This motor allows the dish to move around to pick up different signals.

Most TV receivers can be paired with a motorized dish so you will not have to worry about that.

The obvious benefit of getting a motorized dish is that it can allow you to enjoy thousands of TV channels.  Many channels are even free!

The downside, as you might have guessed, is that motorized dishes are substantially larger than their alternative. After all, it has to house a motor inside.

The minimum size for a motorized dish is around 32 inches. But you will want one with a diameter of 39 inches for the best results.

If you have a small home, the installation might be a problem.

Last, of all, motorized satellite dish prices tend to be higher than stationary ones.
