Do You Need a Roof Repair or Replacement?

What’s the most important part of a house? The roof. Not only does it protect you and your family from the elements but it also acts as a thermal barrier for the building.

That doesn’t mean that it’s invisible, though. Over time, it can still wear down. For example, the shingles can fall off.

That’s why it’s so important to check it regularly. That way, if anything happens, you can repair it quickly. In some cases, however, you’ll have to replace it altogether.

Signs That You Need Your Roof Repaired

Roofs can get damaged. Here are a few signs that you need to get it repaired by a roofing contractor.

Buckling or Curling Shingles

Are any of the shingles buckling or curling? If so, you might want to get them replaced. Generally speaking, this is due to excessive heat, moisture, and aging. Poor installation can also cause this to happen.

Damaged Flashing

Flashing is a thin material that’s used to direct rainwater away from certain areas of the roof. Made of rust-resistant metal, it can lift or separate due to the contraction of the roof.

If that happens, water can seep into the house.

Algae Growth

Check the color of your roof. Do you notice any dark spots or streaks? If so, you might have an algae problem, which may be due to excessive moisture (e.g. leak in the roof).

Signs That You Need Your Roof Replaced

In some cases, you’ll have to replace the whole thing. That is, repairs won’t be enough.

Old Roof

How old is your roof? If it’s over 20 years old, there’s a good chance that it’ll need to be replaced. The materials will change over time, after all.

Sagging Roof

A sagging roof is a sure sign that it needs to be replaced (check to see if there’s a curve, swag, or dip in the roof). As it is, it’s usually caused by excessive weight due to snow and ice.

Entire Shingles Are Missing

There’s nothing wrong with replacing a few shingles here and there. If your roof starts to look like a checkerboard, however, it’s probably time to replace the whole thing—it’s a sign that your roof is well past its prime.
